Salt Water Taffy is about longing, whether for a person, an unattainable ideal, or a certain lost moment when we were either loved or longed to be loved. As we age, everyday life — governed by economics and the accumulation of social expectation — seems to demand the abandonment of our desire to selflessly love, or to even recognize our ability to do so.
The act of performing this piece is a reclamation of our everyday losses and an attempt to overcome our fears of not measuring up. We sing love songs, hold one another in embraces, and groom one another in an effort to reaffirm our ability to love and be loved.
